Jazz & Jen’s Puppy Training Day One.

Last night at 7:00 Jazz and I went to our first puppy training and socialization class, which is held every Monday night for 5 weeks. The nice thing about this training is that all the puppies are under 6 months, which means that most puppies were the size of Jazz. Jazz impressed the trainer and other students because she already knew the sit command and was able to quickly learn come & sit. Jazz did well with restrain, which is when you hold the puppy so that you can exam their body. The vets really like when you work on this one because it makes their life easier. There were two commands that she was weak on; down, which is considered one of the most submissive commands and stay.

Ok so everyone right about now is thinking great job Jazz, so I’ll pause here….(Long Pause)

Well after working on all of these it came time for the social part of the class! What I forgot to tell you was the Jazz already socialized with the other nine dogs before class started, so what happened next took everyone but me by surprise.

Social time requires all students to be off the leash, so that the puppies can play and socialize freely. It’s also a requirement to insure your pet socializes with all the different types of puppy personalities. Well, Jazz took it upon herself to herd all the puppies back to their owner or at least into the circle near their owners. This would have been acceptable if Jazz could herd without nipping the dogs! The trainer explained it was natural for the type of dog Jazz is, however it will take the entire class to assist in correcting this natural instinct. After correction and redirection the class ended with the trainer stating, “I am very proud of all of you for not trying to save your dog because it’s important that your pet learns how to stand up for itself.” Needless to say at this point all the dogs were back on their leashes and standing far away from Jazz and I.

Until Next Week!
